ShopBack eSIM reuses one profile across 160+ countries

August 11, 2026. ShopBack's travel eSIM is live inside its rewards app in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia and Germany. The service, powered by Gigs, lets an eligible ShopBack user install one profile, buy data for more than 160 countries and earn cashback on data-plan purchases.

The rollout was announced on May 7. It is worth revisiting now because ShopBack Australia updated its eSIM FAQ on July 29, adding the traveler rules missing from most launch coverage. Hotspot use is supported, destination arrival starts the plan, and an issued profile cannot be transferred, reinstalled or refunded merely because the traveler no longer needs it. Users in another launch market should still check the terms shown in their own app before payment.

The traveler decision: ShopBack is a useful choice for an existing user who values cashback and wants one profile for repeat trips. Compare the in-app plan itself before paying. The open announcement does not publish a universal price table, package-level operators, calls, SMS or a local number.

What the ShopBack eSIM launch actually includes

Gigs' launch announcement and ShopBack's current company post confirm the core offer.

The distinction between purchase market and destination coverage matters. A ShopBack account in one of the other markets where the rewards platform operates does not automatically gain eSIM access. ShopBack says more markets are planned, but it has not published the next rollout list or dates.

ShopBack eSIM availability: seven markets are live

The service is currently available to ShopBack users in:

1. Singapore;
2. Hong Kong;
3. Taiwan;
4. Malaysia;
5. New Zealand;
6. Australia; and
7. Germany.

Those are the sales markets, not a seven-country roaming plan. A user in a launch market can browse destination plans covering more than 160 countries in the ShopBack app. ShopBack's engineering account describes the purchase flow as browse, checkout, install once, manage and top up.

ShopBack operates in more markets than the seven named for this eSIM rollout. Travelers should look for the eSIM entry inside their own current app instead of assuming that a general ShopBack account qualifies.

One eSIM for repeat trips does not mean one plan lasts forever

The phrase "one eSIM for life" describes the reusable profile. It does not mean that one data allowance or validity period never expires.

After the profile is installed, a traveler buys an eligible data plan for the next country or region. A later purchase can be loaded onto the same profile. Each plan still has its own allowance, coverage and validity. ShopBack's public FAQ does not expose those package records on the open web, so the app screen at checkout is the source for the current terms.

This distinction is particularly important for a long trip. A 365-day global plan discussed in public forums is a specific offer, not the default validity for every ShopBack package. Compare a global plan with separate country or regional plans using the same trip dates and data requirement. When the ShopBack eSIM activates

ShopBack says a purchased plan activates after the eSIM is installed, turned on and connected in a supported country or region. That wording supports advance installation without starting the plan at home when the destination network is unavailable.

Use reliable Wi-Fi to complete the first installation before departure. Then, at the destination:

1. turn on the ShopBack eSIM;
2. select it for mobile data;
3. enable data roaming on that travel line if the installation guide requires it;
4. keep data roaming off on the home line; and
5. test a map and a normal webpage before leaving the arrival area.

Do not rely on the general rule if the selected checkout card states another start trigger. The eSIM installation timing guide separates profile installation from package activation.

Hotspot works, but the plan allowance still matters

ShopBack's July FAQ explicitly permits hotspot use. A traveler can tether a laptop or another phone when the device also supports personal hotspot.

That permission does not create extra data. Every connected device draws from the selected allowance, and software updates, cloud sync and video meetings can use it quickly. ShopBack does not publish a universal tethering cap or reduced-speed rule on the open FAQ. Read the selected package and monitor usage in the app.

Sharing an eSIM is not the same as copying it

Gigs says ShopBack users can share eSIMs with travel companions inside the app. ShopBack's support page also says each issued eSIM can be installed only once, on one device, and cannot be transferred or shared across multiple devices after installation.

Those statements can coexist. The safe interpretation is that an account holder can buy or assign an uninstalled profile for a companion, not duplicate one active profile across two phones. Confirm the receiving device before installation. If the wrong person installs it, the public refund and transfer rules leave little room to recover the purchase.

A deleted or replaced ShopBack eSIM cannot be reinstalled

ShopBack says an issued profile cannot be transferred to another device or reinstalled. That makes three precautions important:

• do not delete the eSIM after a trip if you intend to reuse it;
• do not install it on a temporary or soon-to-be-replaced phone; and
• contact ShopBack support before resetting, repairing or trading in the device.

The reusable model is convenient only while the original profile remains on the original phone. Save the order reference outside that device, but do not assume the reference creates a replacement profile. The travel eSIM transfer index compares this rule with other provider policies.

ShopBack eSIM refunds are limited

The current FAQ allows a refund only when ShopBack cannot successfully provision or deliver the eSIM after payment. Once the profile has been issued to the account, the order is treated as fulfilled and is not eligible for a refund.

The public rule does not promise a refund for:

• buying the wrong destination or allowance;
• installing on an incompatible or locked phone;
• changing or cancelling the trip;
• deleting the profile;
• moving to another phone; or
• deciding that the network performance is not suitable.

Check the device, destination, dates and allowance before payment. If provisioning fails, record the error and contact ShopBack through the account support path before attempting repeated purchases.

Does the ShopBack eSIM include calls, SMS or a phone number?

ShopBack describes the product as a travel data plan and names data-based apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Grab and Google Maps. The reviewed public pages do not promise carrier calls, SMS or a local number.

Treat the selected plan as data-only unless its own checkout record explicitly adds those features. App calls and messages use mobile data; they are not the same as dialing a hotel landline or receiving an SMS verification code on a new local number.

A compatible dual-SIM phone can keep the usual line enabled for calls and texts while ShopBack supplies data. Turn off roaming and automatic data switching on the home line. Charges for calls, voicemail and SMS still depend on that carrier. The eSIM calls and SMS guide explains the two-line setup.

Cashback is useful, but the rate is not universal

ShopBack says every eSIM data-plan purchase earns cashback. Its Australia FAQ also advertises 100% cashback on a first 1GB plan for a limited time. That market-specific promotion should not be treated as a permanent global price or a promise for all seven launch markets.

Before checkout, confirm:

• the plan price and billing currency;
• the cashback rate and maximum amount;
• whether the reward is instant, pending or subject to validation;
• the expiry date of any first-purchase offer; and
• whether another voucher changes eligibility.

Cashback reduces the effective cost only if it tracks and becomes usable. Compare the amount paid today as well as the later reward. Public forum prices are useful for identifying questions, but they change too quickly to serve as the current ShopBack catalog.

Coverage claims do not reveal the local network or data route

ShopBack says its eSIM works with hundreds of networks, automatically connects to the strongest available option and can provide 4G LTE or 5G. Its open FAQ does not list the operator for each package or explain where internet traffic exits.

That matters because a 5G indicator does not measure latency or routing distance. Some forum users have asked whether traffic is routed through Hong Kong, but a community comment is not enough to establish the route for every package. Travelers who need low latency for work, gaming or calls should ask ShopBack which operator and gateway apply to the exact plan, then test before a critical session.

Roaming eSIM publishes package-level operator and speed fields on its open catalog. A named operator is still not a signal guarantee at every address, but it gives the traveler more information before paying. The travel eSIM network disclosure index explains why this field matters.

ShopBack eSIM versus Roaming eSIM

ShopBack and Roaming eSIM serve overlapping travelers, but they win for different reasons.

🏆 Roaming eSIM wins when pre-purchase detail matters: a traveler can compare the actual destination, allowance, validity, price, speed label, operators and top-up status on the open web. ShopBack wins when an eligible existing user values cashback and wants one profile for repeat purchases.

This is not a universal price or speed claim. ShopBack does not publish a stable, open package table that permits a like-for-like comparison across all destinations. Compare the same allowance, validity and route in both services before choosing.

Four current Roaming eSIM route examples

The public Roaming eSIM package endpoint was checked on August 11. It returned 43 Japan plans, 34 Thailand plans, 32 Indonesia plans and 37 United States plans. Each response exposed retail price, allowance, validity, network-speed labels, listed operator options and package-level top-up status.

1. Confirm that the eSIM entry is present in the current ShopBack app for your account market.
2. Check that the phone is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked.
3. Compare the destination, allowance, validity, price and cashback terms.
4. Decide which travel companion will receive each profile before installation.
5. Install on the phone that will use and retain the reusable profile.
6. Keep the usual SIM selected for calls and SMS if it is still needed.
7. Turn off roaming and automatic data switching on the home line.
8. At the destination, enable the ShopBack line and follow its roaming instruction.
9. Test normal browsing and hotspot before relying on the plan for work.

ShopBack's June engineering account confirmed that the same profile is used for later plan purchases.

ShopBack's Australia support pages, checked on August 11 and updated on July 29, established the current device, unlock, destination-activation, hotspot, refund, one-device, no-transfer and no-reinstall rules. The Australia-specific first-1GB cashback message was not generalized to other markets.
