Summer Sonic 2026 guide: Tokyo vs Osaka, tickets and travel

Summer Sonic runs from Friday, August 14 to Sunday, August 16, 2026, in two cities at the same time. The Tokyo edition is in Chiba at ZOZO Marine Stadium, Makuhari Messe and the beach area. The Osaka edition is at Expo '70 Commemorative Park in Suita. It is the festival's 25th anniversary and its first three-day edition.

The main planning trap is simple: Tokyo and Osaka do not share one ticket, and the artists rotate between the cities on different dates. Choose the artist and date first, then the city. Trying to cross Japan after one headliner and reach the other site the next morning is possible on some pairings, but it is tiring and falls inside the busiest Obon rail period.

Pick the artist date before the city

Do not book accommodation from a lineup poster alone. The same artist can play Tokyo one day and Osaka on another. The official timetable controls stage and time details.

This table is for choosing a city and day, not planning stage changes. Open the current timetable, favorite the artists in the official app and check for clashes. A full festival lineup contains more artists than any practical day can hold.

Tokyo or Osaka: which Summer Sonic should you choose?

Choose Tokyo if you are already staying in the capital, want the Marine Stadium experience, prefer more indoor time at Makuhari Messe or want Midnight Sonic. Remember that the venue is in Chiba. A hotel on the far western side of Tokyo can turn the return journey into a long late-night crossing.

Choose Osaka if the rest of the trip is in Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe or western Japan. Expo '70 Commemorative Park is reached through the Osaka Monorail, and the event also sells dedicated travel products. The site is outdoors for longer stretches, so sun and rain preparation matter.

Do not choose by the words "Tokyo" and "Osaka" alone. Compare these four points:

1. The artist's actual city and date
2. The admission ticket still available for that date
3. The route from accommodation to the venue and back
4. The next morning's travel, especially during Obon

Summer Sonic 2026 tickets for overseas visitors

Use the official Tokyo ticket page or official Osaka ticket page as the starting point. The Tokyo page currently links international routes including eplus international and AXS. Ticket availability differs by city, date and upgrade.

As of August 1, Tokyo three-day tickets and all Tokyo Platinum tickets are listed as sold out. The Tokyo one-day ticket for August 16 is marked as having only a few places left. Osaka still lists standard one-day and three-day purchase routes, while Platinum for August 14 and 16 is sold out. These labels can change without warning. A link on an old article is not proof that inventory remains.

Every ticket covers only the printed date and venue. There is no combined Tokyo and Osaka pass. Admission also requires wristband exchange, and the organizer says lost tickets or wristbands will not be reissued.

What if the ticket system asks for a Japanese phone number?

First, return to the official city ticket page and use an international purchase link when one is offered. Do not enter a made-up number or borrow a stranger's identity.

If an existing order is tied to a Japanese number or a collection method you cannot use, contact the named seller and the organizer in writing. Include the order number, buyer name, event city and date. Save the reply offline. Do not buy a second ticket until the seller confirms whether the original can be collected or transferred.

Tickets bought through an unauthorized resale channel may be refused. The organizer prohibits commercial resale and does not guarantee unofficial purchases. A social post showing a barcode is not a safe transfer.

Platinum, Morning First, Box Seat and Midnight Sonic

These products solve different problems. None is a substitute for reading the exact city and date on the ticket.

Platinum

Platinum is an upgraded admission type with specified benefits. Availability is limited and several 2026 dates are already sold out. It does not create a pass for both cities.

Morning First

Morning First is a separate priority-entry product, not festival admission and not a guaranteed front-row place. You still need a valid admission ticket for the same city and day.

Osaka's second Morning First lottery runs from July 28 to August 3. The current rules say it is for residents of Japan and does not accept overseas applications. Osaka sells separate Morning First types for four stages, so selecting the wrong stage defeats the purpose.

Tokyo Box Seat

The Tokyo Box Seat is an add-on for groups of one to five. It has no roof, and every person still needs the relevant admission ticket. Treat it as assigned group space, not weather shelter.

Midnight Sonic

Midnight Sonic is restricted to people aged 20 or older. Bring original physical photo identification. A screenshot of identification is not accepted. Some eligible Summer Sonic day tickets include admission under the official terms, so check the current entitlement before buying a separate Midnight ticket.

Standalone Midnight Sonic ticket holders cannot remain inside through the venue closure and reopening. Follow the entry window written on the ticket.

Getting to Summer Sonic Tokyo

Makuhari Messe access guidance places the site near Kaihin-Makuhari Station. The festival estimates about seven minutes on foot to Makuhari Messe and about 15 minutes to ZOZO Marine Stadium. Crowd routing can make the real walk longer.

The 2026 Tokyo map shows free shuttle buses linking the Marine, Messe and Beach areas. Use them when the official app indicates, but leave a buffer between sets. A stage change that looks short on a flat image can include an exit queue, shuttle wait and security-controlled route.

There is no dedicated festival parking, and vehicle pickup or drop-off around the venue is prohibited. The dependable plan is rail to Kaihin-Makuhari, followed by the signed event route.

Tokyo also lists JTB return buses from the venue to Shinjuku, Yokohama and Omiya. Current sales run from July 27 through August 9. Read the exact boarding and departure conditions before purchase, since this is a one-way event product rather than general transport.

Getting to Summer Sonic Osaka

The nearest station is Banpaku-kinen-koen on the Osaka Monorail. Osaka Monorail access guidance estimates roughly five minutes from the station to the park gate. The operator recommends an IC card because ticket machines can develop queues and may run extra trains during the event.

Summer Sonic also lists JTB tours from Umeda, Shin-Osaka, Namba, Tennoji, Kobe or Sannomiya, Amagasaki, Kyoto, Tokushima, Nagoya and Okayama. Current sales continue through August 9. These can remove a transfer, but each route has its own departure point and return condition.

A separate Osaka venue shuttle advertises a roughly 30-minute round trip, with outward service from 8am to noon and return service from 6pm to 10:30pm. The listed price is 5,300 yen, with sales until the day before. Confirm the departure point on the purchase screen because the official product can be updated.

Osaka has no dedicated festival parking, and private pickup or drop-off around the venue is prohibited. Do not ask a taxi or ride service to ignore the closure.

Can you attend Tokyo one day and Osaka the next?

Technically, yes, if the tickets, rail times and sleep plan fit. In practice, this is the hardest version of the weekend.

Summer Sonic overlaps the 2026 Obon travel period. From August 7 through 16, all seats on Nozomi services are reserved. The final festival day is also the final day of that special arrangement. Trains and stations can be busy, and a missed reserved service can disrupt the handoff.

Use this test before buying two-city tickets:

• Can you leave the first venue without relying on an uncertain final encore time?
• Is there a reserved train that reaches the next city with enough time for sleep?
• Is the second hotel close to the next morning's departure route?
• Can the trip still work if weather or crowd control delays the first exit?
• Is seeing the artist twice worth losing most of the recovery time?

For most visitors, one city and two or three festival days will be a better experience than chasing the same lineup across Japan.

Moving between stages without losing the day

The official app is the main planning tool. It includes the timetable, venue maps, favorites, personal schedules and push updates. Build a short must-see list and allow at least one flexible block.

At Tokyo, identify whether a set is at Marine, Messe or Beach. The free shuttle helps with longer site movements, but it does not remove queues. At Osaka, check the route across the park and allow for outdoor walking in heat.

Avoid stacking sets that finish and begin at the same minute on opposite sides of either site. Choose which artist matters more before the first set ends. Leaving early every hour can turn the festival into a day of corridors and queues.

Bags, bottles, umbrellas and lockers

Tokyo and Osaka publish separate rules. Do not assume an item accepted at one city will pass at the other.

The Osaka parasol wording is easy to misread. A light rain jacket is the dependable option because it works while umbrellas are restricted and leaves both hands free in a crowd. Recheck the Osaka attention page before packing.

The Tokyo pages reviewed on August 1 do not state one universal bag-size limit. Do not repeat a size from another Japanese festival. Carry the smallest practical bag and follow the current security instructions.

Tokyo lists a 2,000 yen per day service for bags up to 70 litres, plus ZOZO lockers and a coat-check area at Makuhari Messe Hall 11. Osaka lists temporary coin lockers with tentative hours from 10am to 9:30pm. Capacity is finite. Keep the ticket, identification, medicine and phone with you instead of storing an item needed at the gate.

Heat, rain and typhoon preparation

Both editions proceed in rain, but severe weather and safety decisions can change the programme. August heat is a more predictable problem. The two sites combine exposed walks, dense crowds and long standing periods.

Bring a permitted bottle, use shade between priority sets and eat before fatigue becomes obvious. Salt tablets or candy are accepted under the current Tokyo notes. Do not wait for a friend to become dizzy before moving to a staffed or cooler area.

The Japan Tourism Agency's Safety tips app provides earthquake, tsunami, weather and heat-illness alerts in 15 languages. Use it alongside the festival app. If a typhoon or severe storm affects the region, the organizer and transport operators control the live decision. A weather app alone cannot confirm that a stage or train is operating.

Children and accessibility

Children of primary-school age and older need a ticket. One preschool child may enter free with each guardian, but that child cannot enter front areas or Platinum spaces. A stroller is allowed only when it is being used for a child and may be restricted where crowd conditions make it unsafe.

Both cities provide designated viewing areas for visitors with disabilities. Tokyo says advance application is not required and visitors can ask staff. Osaka asks people who need support to contact the organizer at least one week before the event. That window is close, so do it now rather than waiting until the gate.

Late hours also matter. Tokyo asks visitors under 18 to be back at their accommodation by 11pm. Osaka restricts unaccompanied younger visitors during the evening and overnight under local rules. Midnight Sonic is always 20 plus.

A family plan should include hearing protection, a fixed meeting point and permission to leave before the headline finish. A free preschool ticket does not make a full outdoor festival day easy for a young child.

Apps and information to save offline

Choose a meeting point that is specific but not inside a stage exit. "Near the station" will not work when thousands of people are making the same trip.

Festival data and phone fallback

Crowded festivals can slow any mobile network. A Japan Roaming eSIM plan can provide travel data for the official app, rail updates, maps and group messages while the usual SIM remains available. It cannot reserve network capacity, bypass a venue rule or guarantee that a message arrives instantly inside a packed stage area.

Is Summer Sonic in Tokyo and Osaka on the same dates?

Choose one city from the artist date, not from the festival name. Buy through the official city page, settle collection questions in writing, reserve any Obon train before relying on it, and save the app timetable and return route offline. Pack to the stricter city rule when the guidance differs.

Summer Sonic is easier when the non-musical decisions are finished before the first set. Then a delayed shuttle or timetable clash is a small adjustment, not the point where the whole day unravels.
