Virgin Atlantic's free eSIM gives passengers 1GB for 48 hours

August 13, 2026. Virgin Atlantic passengers with a booking can claim 1GB of complimentary Kolet mobile data for 48 hours. The airline introduced the benefit through its app in June after announcing the Kolet partnership in May, and the offer still appears in the official Virgin Atlantic app history.

The free allowance is useful for arrival tasks such as opening a map, retrieving a booking or messaging a driver. It is not airline Wi-Fi, ordinary home-network roaming or a full-trip unlimited plan.

The practical answer: claim the free 1GB if it appears with your booking and covers the destination. Install it on reliable Wi-Fi before departure, then keep large downloads, cloud backups and video off mobile data. Choose a separate full-trip plan if 1GB or 48 hours will not cover the itinerary.

The Virgin Atlantic and Kolet offer at a glance

The offer is still current, but Virgin's public terms are brief

The partnership was announced on May 19. Virgin Atlantic's official App Store history shows that version 1.4.0 added the two-day Kolet benefit on June 22. Newer app versions remain available, and the release history still tells customers with a booking that they can use two days of free mobile data.

A public post from the Virgin Atlantic employee who says he led the delivery identifies the allowance as 1GB for passengers. Kolet's partnership announcement confirms two days of free mobile data. Contemporary launch coverage describes the same 1GB and 48-hour combination.

The airline does not publish a detailed Virgin-specific legal page in the search results we reviewed. That leaves several important conditions unstated publicly, including whether codes are limited to one per booking or one per passenger, whether an existing Kolet customer qualifies, when the redemption link expires and which codeshare bookings are included.

Treat the offer shown inside the booking or app as the decision point. Do not assume that a headline saying "all passengers" guarantees a code for every traveler on every ticketing channel.

How to claim the Virgin Atlantic free eSIM

Launch coverage says Kolet is integrated into the Virgin Atlantic app, booking confirmation pages and pre-departure messages. The passenger is sent to a co-branded page, then completes installation in the Kolet app.

Use this sequence:

1. Add the Virgin Atlantic booking to the current airline app.
2. Look for the Kolet data benefit in the trip, booking confirmation or pre-departure email.
3. Open the supplied link and confirm that the destination and 1GB free package are displayed.
4. Check that the phone supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked.
5. Install the Kolet profile on private, stable Wi-Fi before departure.
6. Keep the Kolet line off for mobile data until arrival unless the redeemed package gives different instructions.
7. At the destination, select Kolet for mobile data and enable data roaming on that line.
8. Turn data roaming off on the home line and disable automatic cellular-data switching if it could return data to the home carrier.

When the 48-hour clock starts

Kolet's general guidance says a data plan does not start at purchase or installation. It starts at the destination when the traveler activates the plan and uses the first megabyte.

That distinction protects the two-day window when the eSIM is installed before the flight. The exact redeemed-plan screen remains the final source because a partner promotion can have rules that differ from a normal paid package.

Avoid testing the travel line against a live network before the intended start if the app shows that doing so will activate the package. A screenshot of the allowance, destination and start state is useful if the app later shows a different expiry time.

Is 1GB enough after a Virgin Atlantic flight?

One gigabyte can handle a light arrival period. It is reasonable for text messages, email, a few maps, boarding documents and a ride request. It becomes a poor fit when the phone starts restoring photos, updating apps, streaming video or sharing a laptop connection.

Trip length alone does not answer the question. A traveler using hotel Wi-Fi and downloaded maps may make 1GB last well beyond two days. A traveler on video calls or a mobile hotspot can use it in hours. Use the travel data calculator with the actual mix of maps, social media, music, calls and work.

Before landing:

• download the first airport-to-hotel route;
• turn off mobile app updates and cloud photo backup;
• save travel documents locally;
• set video apps to Wi-Fi only; and
• keep a payment card and essential address available offline.

The free package should be treated as a measured allowance, not as a promise that every arrival task will work in a crowded terminal or low-signal area.

Calls, texts and your usual number

The complimentary package supplies mobile data. It does not give the phone a normal local number or ordinary carrier SMS.

Kolet lets customers use WhatsApp, FaceTime and other internet-calling apps over the data connection. Its separate International Calls feature can place outbound calls to regular numbers using paid Koins, but Kolet says those calls use a temporary number, cannot receive return calls and do not support SMS, emergency or toll-free numbers.

Keeping the home SIM switched on can preserve the usual number for incoming texts, subject to the home carrier's rules. Hotspot, local networks and latency

Kolet's current help page says hotspot sharing is allowed on compatible devices. The allowance is not multiplied for the laptop or second phone. Every connected device uses the same 1GB, so operating-system updates and video meetings should remain on Wi-Fi.

Coverage in more than 190 destinations does not identify the network, 5G availability or internet route for every free package. Open the redeemed offer and check its destination and any listed network before travel. Signal depends on the local operator, building, terrain, congestion and phone bands.

Cruise, ferry and aircraft networks are outside ordinary terrestrial destination coverage unless the specific package says otherwise. Keep airplane mode on in flight and at sea when an unfamiliar maritime or airborne cellular network could create charges on the home line.

What happens after the free 1GB runs out?

Kolet sells paid country, regional and global packages through its app and website. It says the installed universal profile can remain on the phone for later trips, so a new profile is not normally required for each paid plan.

Do not wait until the free balance reaches zero before checking the choices. A top-up needs an internet connection, and the available allowance, validity, network and price can vary by destination. Compare the paid continuation with an independently selected plan while reliable Wi-Fi is still available.

The public Virgin material does not promise that paid Kolet data is charged by the airline, earns Flying Club points or remains refundable under Virgin Atlantic ticket rules. The eSIM purchase is a separate connectivity decision.

Virgin Atlantic free data versus Roaming eSIM

The free Kolet allowance has an honest advantage: an eligible passenger pays nothing for the first 1GB. A paid Roaming eSIM should not be presented as cheaper than free.

🏆 Where Roaming eSIM wins: it is the stronger fit when the connection must be chosen independently of the flight, cover more than two days, use more than 1GB or match a specific country or regional itinerary before departure. The Virgin Atlantic offer wins the free arrival-data case when the traveler is eligible and 1GB is enough.

The live Roaming eSIM catalog was checked on August 13. It returned 37 United States plans with listed AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon combinations, 16 India plans with Airtel, Idea, Jio, Vi India or Vodafone combinations, and 16 South Africa plans with Cell C or Vodacom combinations. Those are catalog-level observations, not a promise that every plan includes every operator. Package cards remain the current source for price, allowance, validity, activation, hotspot and top-up rules.

Ten questions travelers ask about the Virgin Atlantic free eSIM

1. Is Virgin Atlantic really giving passengers a free eSIM? The airline's official app history says customers with a booking can receive two days of free Kolet data, while the Virgin project lead identifies the allowance as 1GB.
2. Does every passenger on the booking get 1GB? A public Virgin project post says all passengers, but no detailed public terms explain one-per-passenger redemption. Use the offers shown for the actual booking rather than assuming multiple codes.
3. Do codeshare and partner-operated flights qualify? Virgin Atlantic has not published that boundary in the sources reviewed. The booking's app or email offer is the practical confirmation.
4. Can an existing Kolet customer claim it? The public Virgin material does not state a new-user restriction. Do not import the first-use rule from another Kolet partner promotion; check the Virgin redemption screen.
5. Does installation start the 48 hours? Kolet's general guidance says no. The package starts at destination activation and first data use, subject to the redeemed offer's own display.
6. Will 1GB cover a whole holiday? It may cover light arrival use, but video, cloud backup, navigation and hotspot traffic can consume it quickly. Estimate the trip rather than relying on the word free.
7. Does it include a phone number, calls or SMS? It is data-only. App calls use data, while Kolet's paid outbound calling feature does not provide a personal number, incoming calls or SMS.
8. Can the free data be used as a hotspot? Kolet permits hotspot use on compatible phones, but every device draws from the same 1GB.
9. What if the offer is missing from the app? Update the app, add the booking and check the booking confirmation and pre-departure email. Then contact Virgin about booking eligibility or Kolet about an issued eSIM that will not install or connect.
10. Should I still buy a full-trip plan? Yes when the booking is not eligible, the destination is not confirmed, the trip exceeds 48 hours, more than 1GB is needed or a particular route must be selected before departure.
