Your Visa may include free GigSky travel data: what the app must confirm
August 13, 2026. Some Visa cardholders can claim complimentary GigSky mobile data in more than 175 destinations. The benefit is useful, but the headline is easy to misread: not every Visa qualifies, and eligible cards do not all receive the same allowance.
There are two main programs. The global benefit can provide a fixed allowance such as 1GB or 3GB for 15 days, with richer issuer-specific versions reaching 10GB. The separate Visa Destinations benefit currently provides three or seven days of unlimited data in six named destinations. The GigSky app must confirm the benefit attached to the exact card.
The practical answer: add the card in GigSky before buying another plan. If the app displays a complimentary entitlement that covers the trip, use it. If it shows no benefit, excludes the destination, offers too little data or ends too early, compare a full-trip Roaming eSIM instead.
Three Visa travel-data offers that should not be confused

The numbers are not competing versions of one rule. They can all be correct for different cards or programs. A card's logo and tier name narrow the possibilities, but the benefit shown after verification is the useful answer.
Which Visa cards receive the global GigSky benefit?
GigSky's current terms organize eligibility by the country where the card was issued. For U.S.-issued cards, the public offer currently lists:
- eligible Visa Signature cards: one 1GB plan valid for 15 days, redeemable once in 365 days, plus 20% off other plans; and
- eligible Visa Infinite cards: one 3GB plan valid for 15 days, redeemable once in 365 days, plus 30% off other plans.
The current U.S. terms place redemption within a promotion window ending November 15, 2027. That date does not guarantee that a bank will keep the same card benefits until then, so the app still needs to confirm the live entitlement.
Canada uses a different structure. GigSky's general terms list one 1GB benefit for eligible Visa Infinite, Infinite+ and Infinite Business cards, two 1GB redemptions for eligible Infinite Privilege cards, and discounts for several lower tiers. An issuer can add another allowance.
Wealthsimple's current credit-card benefits page is a useful example. It lists a complimentary 1GB benefit plus a 10GB global mobile-data plan annually for eligible Visa Infinite+ cardholders, while its Infinite Privilege description lists two 1GB benefits plus a 10GB plan. That does not make 10GB a universal Visa Infinite benefit.
The safest rule is simple: do not borrow the allowance from an article written for another country, bank or card. Open the app and verify the actual card.
The global benefit can exclude your home country
GigSky describes its global Visa plan as covering more than 175 destinations, but its terms exclude use in the cardholder's home country. A U.S.-issued card should not be treated as a source of complimentary domestic U.S. data under this global benefit.
That is different from Visa Destinations. A current destination promotion can include the United States or another named market even when the global benefit excludes home-country use. Check which program name appears beside the plan before drawing a conclusion.
Coverage at country level also does not guarantee signal in every building, rural area or transit route. Local network availability, congestion, terrain and the phone's supported bands still matter. The plan details in GigSky should identify the destination; they do not promise continuous coverage.
Visa Destinations currently covers six markets
The current Visa Destinations page lists:
- United Kingdom;
- France;
- United Arab Emirates;
- Thailand;
- United States; and
- Mexico.
Eligible Visa Infinite cardholders can receive seven days of unlimited data in a listed destination. Other eligible consumer and commercial Visa cards, including some debit and prepaid cards, can receive three days. GigSky's public terms describe one complimentary redemption per destination in a 365-day period, subject to card eligibility.
"Unlimited" does not mean the connection stays at its fastest speed without a threshold. GigSky currently provides up to 3.5GB of fastest-speed data in each 24-hour period. After that, data continues at reduced speed until the next daily reset. Hotspot use is included, but every connected device contributes to the same daily consumption.
The free period does not auto-renew. Data stops when the included days end unless the traveler buys another plan.
Canada is no longer in the current destination list
GigSky temporarily extended a North America Visa Destinations offer to Canada around the 2026 football tournament. The published extension ended July 31.
As of August 13, the current destination page includes the United States and Mexico but not Canada. A cached article, old screenshot or broad phrase such as "North America" should not be used to assume a current Canadian entitlement.
An eligible Canadian card may still carry a separate global benefit for travel outside Canada. That is a different plan with different allowance and home-country rules.
How to check and claim the Visa benefit
The card check is more useful than trying to infer eligibility from a list of product names.
- Install the current GigSky app on an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone.
- Open the Visa benefits area and select the card's issue country when requested.
- Enter the eligible Visa card for verification.
- Read the entitlement displayed for that card, including allowance, destination, validity and discount.
- Confirm that the complimentary plan shows no purchase price before redeeming it.
- Install the GigSky profile while connected to private, stable Wi-Fi.
- Keep the home line from using roaming data, and select the travel line for cellular data after arrival.
- Enable data roaming on the GigSky line if its setup instructions require it.

If the entitlement is missing, do not repeatedly submit the card or buy a paid plan by mistake. Confirm the issue country and card details, update the app, and contact the issuing bank or GigSky. A bank can confirm whether the card is enrolled in the benefit; GigSky can investigate the verification and data service.
When the plan starts
GigSky's global Visa terms allow a claimed plan to remain unused for as long as 365 days after checkout before automatic activation. Once activated, its 15-day validity and data allowance apply. The exact plan screen should be treated as the final instruction because a destination offer and an issuer-specific plan can use different timing.
Installing the profile before a trip is normally useful. It gives the traveler time to fix device or Wi-Fi problems without intentionally starting the destination plan. Avoid testing a live travel line against an eligible network when the app says that network connection begins validity.
Take a screenshot of the confirmed allowance, destination and expiry before departure. If the visible benefit changes, that record gives support a clear starting point.
Card verification, privacy and multiple cards
GigSky needs the card number to identify the issuing country, network tier and available entitlement. Its Visa terms also describe sharing redemption-related information with Visa and the issuing bank. Travelers should use the official GigSky app or site, not a link received from an unknown sender.
A complimentary redemption should display a zero price. A separate paid plan or discounted plan can still ask for payment. Read the checkout total rather than assuming every screen inside the Visa section is free.
GigSky says a traveler with more than one separately eligible card can attach the benefit for each card. That does not allow the same card entitlement to be redeemed twice by the primary cardholder and an authorized user. Issuers can also apply their own account and authorized-user rules.
Do not add another person's card merely to test eligibility. The cardholder should perform the verification and review any bank notification it triggers.
Calls, SMS, hotspot and cruise use
The complimentary plans supply mobile data. They do not provide a normal local phone number, native mobile calls or carrier SMS. Internet calls and messages can work through apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal while data is available.
The home SIM can remain active for the usual number, subject to the home carrier's charges. Set GigSky as the mobile-data line, turn data roaming off on the home line, and disable automatic cellular-data switching if it could return data to the home carrier. Hotspot use is permitted under the current destination offer. It can consume 3.5GB quickly if a laptop starts cloud sync, software updates or video calls. Use the travel data calculator before treating a free allowance as a full-trip plan.
The complimentary destination plan does not cover cellular service at sea on a cruise. GigSky says an eligible Visa discount can apply to a separate cruise plan, but that is not the same as free destination data. When the free Visa data is enough
The free plan is the sensible first choice when the app confirms eligibility, the destination is included, the phone is compatible and the allowance covers the trip. A three-day destination benefit may handle an airport arrival and short city break. A 1GB global plan can cover light maps, messaging and booking access if large downloads stay on Wi-Fi.
It becomes less predictable when the trip crosses several markets, lasts longer than the free period, involves hotspot work or depends on a specific local network. Ten gigabytes sounds generous, but it is still tied to one issuer's rules and a 15-day window in the published example.
Download the first airport route, essential tickets and hotel address before flying. Turn off photo backup, app updates and high-resolution streaming on mobile data. These steps protect any measured allowance regardless of provider.
Visa and GigSky versus Roaming eSIM
GigSky has the clearest price advantage when the app grants a suitable plan: complimentary data costs less than a paid plan. Roaming eSIM should not be described as cheaper than free.

🏆 Where Roaming eSIM wins: it is the more dependable choice when the traveler is ineligible, wants to compare the plan before sharing card details, needs longer or larger coverage, or must choose a country or regional route for the whole itinerary. The Visa benefit wins when the app confirms a free plan that already fits.
The live Roaming eSIM catalog was checked on August 13 for the United Kingdom, France, United Arab Emirates and United States. It returned multiple plan sizes and validity periods, with package cards identifying supplied operator combinations and whether that exact plan is eligible for top-up. Those fields can differ by package, so the live cards below remain the source for current terms.

Ten questions travelers ask about the Visa free eSIM
- Does every Visa card qualify? No. Eligibility depends on the issue country, card tier, issuer and live enrollment. The GigSky app must show the entitlement for the exact card.
- Why do people report 1GB, 3GB, 10GB and unlimited data? They may be looking at different global tiers, issuer-specific benefits or the separate Visa Destinations program. One screenshot cannot establish another card's allowance.
- Will GigSky charge the card during verification? A complimentary plan should display a zero price. A discounted or additional plan can have a charge, so check the final total before confirming.
- Can I use benefits from two eligible Visa cards? GigSky's terms allow separately eligible cards to carry their own benefits. The same card entitlement cannot be redeemed twice through primary and authorized users.
- Does installation start the plan? The current global terms allow installation before use and describe a long unused-plan window, but a destination or issuer plan can differ. Follow the activation wording shown with the actual entitlement.
- Can I use the global benefit at home? GigSky's global Visa terms exclude the cardholder's home country. A separately listed Visa Destination can have different rules.
- Does the free plan work on a cruise? Not for cellular service at sea. An eligible discount may apply to a separate cruise plan, while ordinary destination data can still work on supported terrestrial networks in port.
- Is Canada included in Visa Destinations? Not on the current August 13 list. The temporary Canada extension ended July 31; the current page lists the United States and Mexico among six destinations.
- Are calls, SMS or a local number included? No. The complimentary service is data-only. App calls and messages can use the data connection.
- Can I use hotspot with unlimited destination data? Yes under the current terms, but only the first 3.5GB in each 24-hour period is at the fastest available speed. Connected devices share that usage.
