Japan Silver Week 2026: trains, crowds and booking plan
Japan's Silver Week runs from Saturday, September 19 to Wednesday, September 23, 2026. If your route includes the Tokaido or Sanyo Shinkansen, reserve the important journey now: every Nozomi seat is reserved from September 18 through 23. The holiday does not make every train reservation-only or close the whole country, but it removes much of the flexibility from an unbooked multi-city trip.

The short answer: keep the trip if your hotels and essential intercity trains are confirmed. If they are not, choose one city base for the five-day break, widen your departure times, and move a Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or Hiroshima transfer to September 18 or 24 when that produces a workable booking. Do not use standing on a Nozomi as the planned fallback for children, large bags or anyone who cannot stand comfortably.

Japan's Cabinet Office holiday calendar lists September 21 as Respect for the Aged Day, September 22 as a holiday under Article 3, paragraph 3 of the Holiday Act, and September 23 as Autumnal Equinox Day. The weekend on September 19 and 20 creates the five-day sequence commonly called Silver Week.
What to book now, in order
Silver Week is close enough that all standard one-month rail sales dates for September 19 to 23 have passed. Work through the bookings in this order:
- Essential intercity train: secure the journey that connects fixed hotels, a flight or a paid event.
- Rural accommodation and limited buses: confirm the last transport to an onsen town, trail base or island ferry before paying for the room.
- Timed attraction: book the one place that would be difficult to replace, then leave room for a slower day.
- Oversized baggage space: choose the correct Shinkansen seat or arrange luggage forwarding.
- Airport positioning night: sleep near the departure airport when a missed same-day connection would be expensive.
Do not reserve every meal and attraction around one fragile train. A later departure, weather warning or tired child should not force you to abandon the rest of the day.
Which Shinkansen trains require reservations during Silver Week?
From September 18 through 23, all seats on Nozomi trains are reserved on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen. This is the corridor linking Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima and Hakata.
The rule does not apply to every Shinkansen in Japan. JR Central says Hikari, Kodama, Mizuho, Sakura and Tsubame continue to have non-reserved seats as usual. Those alternatives may still be busy, and a slower service can add significant journey time, but they are not covered by the same all-reserved Nozomi rule.
Check the train name as well as the route. A search result that says "Shinkansen" is not enough to tell you whether the seat rule applies.
How to reserve a train after the booking window opens
JR Central says ordinary reserved seats go on sale at 10:00 a.m. Japan time one month before departure. Online reservation products can accept some bookings earlier, but the number of seats released far in advance is limited. As of September 8, the standard sales window is open for every Silver Week date.
Use the booking service that covers the route:

What to do when adjacent seats are unavailable
First, widen the departure time by several hours. Then compare the preceding or following day, Hikari or Kodama services, and a route with one fewer hotel change.

It is not a good default for a young child or a traveler who needs assistance. Search another service before splitting a group that must remain together.
JR Central permits a passenger with the correct non-reserved limited express ticket to stand on the deck of an ordinary Nozomi car during the peak period. Treat that as a rule to understand, not a trip plan. A seat on a slower train is usually a better fallback than an uncertain standing journey with luggage.
Oversized baggage can sell out before the train
On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, baggage measuring 160cm or more and up to 250cm when length, width and height are added together requires a seat with an oversized baggage area. Those seats are limited.
Measure the case before booking. Select the baggage seat explicitly, and check that the confirmation shows it. If the right space is unavailable, compare another train or send the large case ahead. Keep passports, medication, chargers, one change of clothes and anything needed that night with you.
Families should also reserve a seat for a child who needs one. JR Central notes that when a child aged one to under six occupies an ordinary reserved seat or Green Car seat, the child fare and fee apply.
Should you stay in one city or keep a multi-city route?
The answer depends on what is already confirmed, not on whether Tokyo or Kyoto is generally "too crowded."

City-based travel is easier to repair because there are more routes, meals and indoor alternatives. Rural travel can be quieter at the destination but harder to recover when the one useful bus, room or ferry is full. Do not treat "leave the city" as a guaranteed crowd solution.

Will attractions, shops and restaurants close?
There is no single Silver Week closure rule. A venue may extend its hours, close a facility, require a numbered ticket or operate normally. Check the current notice for any place that would be hard to replace.
Two 2026 examples show why a generic answer fails:
- Benesse Art Site Naoshima: some art facilities open earlier during September 19 to 23, and named facilities will open every day during the holiday. The exact arrangement varies by site, so use the official Silver Week notice with the ferry plan.
- Cup Noodles Museum Osaka Ikeda: the parking lot closes from September 19 to 23. The museum recommends public transport, and same-day My Cup Noodles Factory numbered tickets can run out. Check the official operations notice before setting out.
For an independent restaurant, clinic, workshop or small museum, look for a dated September notice on the official site. Usual weekly hours in a map listing may not reflect the holiday.
Is September 24 still affected by Silver Week?
September 24 is not one of the five holidays, and JR Central's published all-reserved Nozomi period ends after September 23. That does not promise an empty train or immediate return to ordinary room availability.
Check the actual service you want. If September 24 has a suitable seat while September 23 does not, moving one night can solve the rail problem. If the route then creates a tight flight connection or a costly hotel change, the calendar advantage may not be worth it.
A workable five-day plan for first-time visitors
This example limits scarce bookings and allows for slower mornings:
- September 19: remain in the arrival city. Use a neighborhood walk and one flexible indoor stop.
- September 20: take a local day trip only if the return route is straightforward. Keep an in-city backup.
- September 21: use one advance-booked attraction, then eat near the same rail line.
- September 22: avoid a hotel change. Put a park, shopping district or museum near the base on the plan.
- September 23: take the confirmed long-distance train, or keep the final city day and move on September 24.
For a longer trip, put the multi-city portion before September 19 or after September 23. Fewer transfers help more than adding a supposedly quiet destination with a difficult last connection.
Weather, safety and accessibility checks
September conditions differ sharply between Hokkaido, Tokyo, Kansai, Kyushu and Okinawa. Check the Japan Meteorological Agency and the operator responsible for your route before a long journey. If severe weather affects rail or flights, the operator's notice takes priority over a saved timetable.
For travelers who use a wheelchair, cannot stand for long or need help changing platforms, reserve the suitable seat and assistance before the busiest day. Do not build the route around an unreserved car or a short station transfer. Check lifts and the final local connection, not only the main Shinkansen leg.
