Motorola Global Connect travel eSIM launches in five markets

August 4, 2026. Motorola has launched Global Connect, a travel data service built for compatible Motorola phones. The app is available first in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Chile, and Motorola says its plans can be used in more than 160 travel destinations.

The service, announced on July 1 and powered by Gigs, lets an eligible user install one eSIM profile, buy data in the Motorola app and add another plan for a later trip. A limited-time launch offer includes 1GB of complimentary data.

The point travelers should not miss: Global Connect covers more than 160 destinations, but people cannot buy it from 160 home markets. The first rollout names five Latin American markets, requires an eSIM-compatible Motorola phone and is presented as a travel data service.

Motorola Global Connect is live in five Latin American markets

Motorola's current launch list names Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Chile. Gigs said on July 1 that Germany, the United Kingdom and selected European devices were expected to follow in the coming weeks. Motorola's global announcement uses the phrase "six markets" in one sentence but lists only those five countries. We count the five markets the company actually names.

The first-party pages reviewed on August 4 still describe Europe as a later rollout. Travelers in Germany, the United Kingdom or another European market should check the app's Google Play availability on their own Motorola phone instead of treating the July target as confirmation that access is live.

This is a purchase-market limit, not a destination limit. A qualifying user in Chile may be able to buy a plan for Japan, for example. A Motorola owner in Japan cannot assume the app is available to buy there merely because Japan may appear as a covered destination.

What the Motorola travel eSIM does

Global Connect is available through Google Play in selected markets and is also preinstalled on some Motorola devices. Inside the app, a user can choose a destination and data allowance, pay for a plan, install the eSIM and monitor usage.

The reusable profile is the most practical part of the launch. Motorola says the same eSIM can be used across supported countries, so a traveler does not need to install another profile at every border. A new data plan may still be needed when an allowance expires or the next destination is not included in the active package.

Motorola says the service uses hundreds of partner networks and can switch among available networks. That does not guarantee a particular operator, speed or 5G connection at every address. The live plan and the phone's radio support remain the useful checks before purchase.

Which Motorola phones work with Global Connect?

The phone must support eSIM. Motorola's Chile launch page gives a quick check: open Settings, choose Mobile network and look for Add eSIM. If that option is missing, do not buy on the assumption that the app alone adds eSIM hardware support.

Motorola publishes a list that includes recent Razr, Edge and selected Moto G models, but model families are not enough. The same phone name can have different eSIM support in different sales regions or carrier versions. Check the exact model number, the country where it was sold and whether it is carrier unlocked.

Does Global Connect include calls, SMS or a local number?

Motorola describes Global Connect as a mobile data service. Its Google Play listing says travelers can keep using the same WhatsApp number for app-based calls and messages. It does not advertise ordinary carrier calls, SMS or a new local phone number as part of the travel plan. WIRED also reported the service as data-only after the launch briefing.

The usual SIM can remain available on a dual-SIM phone. Motorola warns that the home carrier may still charge roaming fees if that line is used abroad. Turn off data roaming for the home line, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and check the home carrier's rules before receiving calls or sending texts.

Motorola's reviewed announcement and public FAQ do not state a universal hotspot or tethering rule. That is not proof hotspot use is blocked. It means the rule should be checked in the exact package terms before relying on the plan for a laptop or another passenger.

How much does Motorola Global Connect cost?

Motorola says prices vary by plan and region, so this is not a universal price list. The app is the current source for a destination's price, validity, network and taxes. The complimentary 1GB is a separate limited-time launch offer, not a permanent zero-cost tier.

Motorola Global Connect versus Roaming eSIM

Global Connect is convenient for an eligible Motorola owner in one of the launch markets. The app is tied closely to the phone, and the single reusable profile reduces repeat setup.

Roaming eSIM has the stronger access and plan-choice case for travelers outside that group. Its public catalog is not restricted to one phone brand or the five named launch markets. A traveler with a compatible, unlocked iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel or Motorola device can compare destination, regional and global package cards before checkout.

This is not a claim that Roaming eSIM is cheaper for every destination. The stronger option depends on the live price, validity, included countries and phone. Roaming eSIM's edge is that more travelers can make that comparison before they commit.

Ten checks before using Motorola Global Connect abroad

1. Home-market access: confirm that the app can be installed or opened in the country where the Motorola account and phone are used.
2. Exact phone variant: verify eSIM support by model number and sales region, not just the product family name.
3. Carrier lock: confirm that the phone can accept another eSIM profile.
4. Promotion status: check whether the limited-time 1GB offer still appears for the account.
5. Whole-route coverage: check every country and stopover included in the trip.
6. Validity: note what starts the plan and when it expires.
7. Calls and texts: arrange a separate option if ordinary voice, SMS or a local number is required.
8. Home-line roaming: disable home-line data roaming and understand the cost of calls or messages on that line.
9. Hotspot and speed: read the selected package terms instead of assuming tethering or 5G is included.
10. Top-up and support: know how to add data and where to get help before leaving reliable Wi-Fi.

Should a Motorola owner choose Global Connect?

Global Connect is worth checking when the app is available on the exact phone, the trip is covered and the package terms suit the itinerary. The complimentary data also gives an eligible user a low-risk way to test setup while the launch offer remains active.

Choose a different travel eSIM when the app is not sold in the home market, the phone is from another brand, the published package lacks a needed feature or a country or regional plan is a better fit.
